Dental Sealants
Sealants are a thin, protective coating that we gently paint onto the chewing surfaces of your back teeth. These teeth have tiny grooves that can be hard to clean, even with brushing and flossing. The sealant fills in those grooves, keeping food and bacteria out and helping to prevent cavities.
The process is quick, painless, and doesn’t require any drilling or numbing. Once in place, sealants can last for several years, giving your teeth an extra layer of defense—especially helpful for kids and teens. According to the CDC, "school-age children without sealants have almost three times more cavities than children with sealants."
Fluoride
Certainly, there has been a lot of controversy about fluoride in the news recently. Understanding the facts about fluoride can help you make the best decisions for yourself and your family.
Cavities are caused by bacteria that live in our mouths. When these bacteria consume sugars, they release acids that attack tooth enamel. Over time, damage to this protective outer layer of our teeth sets the stage for tooth decay.
Fluoride helps fight cavities by repairing the damage these acids can do to our teeth. The repair process is called remineralization.
There is a lot of misinformation in the media about fluoride. Here are science-based answers to questions you may have.
